I don't love recriminalizing drug possession, but I can live with it as a C misdemeanor. A better approach would be to treat drug addiction like what it is - a mental health condition that sometimes requires involuntary treatment.

The state has a shortage of public defenders, and the tendency of some defendants to skip court appearances could further strain the state’s frayed criminal justice system, for example by crowding jails if people miss court dates and warrants are issued for their arrest.

Did you read the articles I linked to?

"Involuntary treatment." doesn't work. The only people who get off drugs are those who want to. You can't make them. It has been tried.

Addiction is not a mental health condition it's a response to human misery. We really need the politicians to get off of everyone's backs. They're just making things worse. And no, we can't live with it. It's working-class people they're going to put in jail. We are tired of middle-class professionals trying to run our working-class lives.

Addicts are just going to tell the criminal injustice system to go to hell. Then what? People who run that system are saying they don't have the capacity to deal with reviving the war on drugs. We don't have enough public defenders to represent the people being arrested now. Is it too much to ask politicians to think about what they're doing?
